Why Investing in Modern Messaging Technology Matters More Than Ever

The telecommunications industry has never stood still, but the pace of change has accelerated dramatically over the past few years. Operators are under increasing pressure to deliver more than reliable connectivity. Customers expect seamless digital experiences, competition is intensifying, margins are tightening, and new technologies are reshaping the way communication services are delivered.

At the center of many of these changes is messaging. Once viewed primarily as network infrastructure, messaging has evolved into a strategic capability that influences customer experience, operational efficiency, digital transformation, and business growth.

The Telecom Industry Is Changing

This evolution is reinforced by the findings of the Simon-Kucher Global Telecommunications Study 2026. Based on research spanning 149 telecom operators across 35 countries and nearly 18,000 consumers, the study concludes that the industry’s future growth will be driven less by connectivity itself and more by customer experience, digital services, automation, and long-term customer value. It paints a clear picture of where telecommunications is heading – and what businesses need to do to remain competitive.

While the report focuses on telecom operators, its conclusions extend far beyond network infrastructure. They point directly to the technologies operators, messaging providers, CPaaS companies, MVNOs, and enterprises need to remain competitive.

In other words, they explain why investment in modern messaging technology has never been more important.

The Industry Is No Longer Competing on Connectivity Alone

One of the most striking findings in the Simon-Kucher study is that connectivity is becoming increasingly commoditized. The report shows that premium mobile ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) has been declining while features that were once considered differentiators – such as 5G, unlimited data, and eSIM – have become widely available across budget providers. Despite these investments, only around 54% of consumers believe their operator offers good value for money, highlighting a growing gap between network investment and customer perception.

If connectivity alone is no longer enough to stand out, where will future differentiation come from?

The answer increasingly lies in the services built on top of the network. Businesses that can engage customers more effectively, launch new services faster, automate operations, and deliver consistent digital experiences will be better positioned to grow. Messaging technology sits at the heart of all of these capabilities.

Customer Lifetime Value Is Replacing Subscriber Growth

The study also highlights a broader shift in how successful operators measure growth. Rather than focusing exclusively on subscriber acquisition or average revenue per user, leading organizations are placing greater emphasis on Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV). In practical terms, this means investing in technologies that strengthen customer relationships over time instead of concentrating solely on attracting new subscribers.

Simon-Kucher describes a broader transformation taking place across the industry: operators are moving from product-led to value-led monetization, replacing reactive retention with proactive customer lifetime value management, and shifting their focus from selling connectivity to managing customer relationships across the entire lifecycle.

That shift has profound implications for messaging. Every authentication message, delivery notification, onboarding journey, promotional campaign, customer support conversation, or omnichannel interaction contributes to the overall customer experience. Messaging is no longer an isolated operational function; it has become a key driver of customer satisfaction, loyalty, and long-term profitability.

Automation Is Becoming a Competitive Requirement

The study also makes it clear that operators are under pressure to do more with existing resources. Growth is increasingly expected to come from smarter operations rather than larger teams. That requires platforms capable of automating customer engagement, commercial processes, operational workflows, and service delivery.

For messaging businesses, this extends far beyond sending SMS.

Today’s operations require intelligent routing, omnichannel orchestration, signalling, number portability, inventory management, financial automation, monitoring, reporting, and real-time visibility across the business.

The technology stack itself has become a competitive advantage.

Customers Expect More Than Messages

The report also highlights another important trend: Customers expect personalized, timely, and relevant interactions throughout their entire relationship with a provider.

Meanwhile, around 30% of consumers are considering changing their operator, with poor value perception and stronger competitor offers among the biggest reasons for switching.

Communication has become one of the strongest tools operators have to strengthen loyalty. Whether through SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, Viber, email, or other channels, every interaction influences customer perception.

That makes messaging technology a business investment – not simply an operational one.

Why No Single Platform Can Solve Every Challenge

The challenges highlighted in the Simon-Kucher study cannot be solved with a single product.

Some organizations need to improve customer engagement through omnichannel messaging. Others need to modernize their SMS infrastructure, automate routing, manage number portability, strengthen signalling, or improve operational visibility.

Each technology addresses a different challenge, but together they create a modern messaging ecosystem.

Why This Matters

At HORISEN, we’ve spent more than 25 years developing software for the messaging industry. During that time, we’ve seen messaging evolve from a standalone service into a critical business function that supports customer engagement, network operations, enterprise communications, and new digital services.

That evolution is reflected in the HORISEN Messaging Ecosystem – a modular portfolio of technologies that enables operators, messaging providers, CPaaS companies, and enterprises to build, operate, and scale every aspect of their messaging business from a single technology foundation.

The findings of the Simon-Kucher study reinforce why this approach matters. Today’s businesses need more than a platform that simply sends messages. They need technology that helps them launch new services faster, simplify increasingly complex operations, automate repetitive processes, improve customer engagement, unlock new revenue opportunities, and adapt to changing market demands.

These are no longer long-term ambitions or competitive advantages reserved for early adopters. According to the research, they are becoming the capabilities that define successful telecommunications businesses.

Where Should You Invest First?

Every organization has different priorities.

Some need to modernize their SMS infrastructure. Others need omnichannel customer engagement. Some require intelligent routing, mobile number portability, signalling, inventory management, or resilient infrastructure.

Each technology solves a different challenge. Together, they form the foundation of a modern messaging business.

This is exactly why we decided to launch our “10 Reasons Why to Invest in…” series.

Rather than looking at messaging as a single technology, we’ll explore the individual building blocks that make up a modern messaging business. Each article will examine a different solution, the challenges it solves, and the value it delivers in today’s telecommunications landscape.

The telecommunications industry is evolving quickly, and independent research confirms the direction of travel. The question is no longer whether messaging technology deserves strategic attention. The real question is which investments will create the greatest value for your business over the next five years.

That’s exactly what this series is designed to help answer.
